Founded by T4 Education and HP in collaboration with Microsoft, the Africa Education Medal is Africa’s most prestigious education accolade.

Two Kenyans – Sara Ruto, former Chief Administrative Secretary of the Ministry of Education, and Snehar Shah, CEO of Moringa School – have been named as the Top 10 finalists for the Africa Education Medal 2023. Founded last year by T4 Education and HP in collaboration with Microsoft, the Africa Education Medal is Africa’s most prestigious education accolade.

The Africa Education Medal was established to recognize the tireless work of those who are transforming education across the continent – to celebrate the stories of those who have lit the spark of change so others will be inspired to take up the torch. It is given to an outstanding individual who has demonstrated impact, leadership, and advocacy in the field of education.

Sara Ruto is the former Chief Administrative Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Kenya, and former CEO of the PAL Network – a South-South network of organizations in Africa, South Asia, and Central America undertaking large-scale, citizen-led assessments and actions to improve foundational literacy and numeracy. Dr Ruto impact’s has been felt across her three decades in academia, civil society, and government. Her work on education reform in Kenya saw her awarded the ‘Elder of the Burning Spear’ (EBS) Presidential Award in 2019.

Dr. Ruto’s name is synonymous across East Africa with the Uwezo learning assessment, the most comprehensive, independent household-based assessment of foundational literacy and numeracy competencies ever implemented in East Africa. The Uwezo initiative mobilized 25,000+ volunteers across three countries, assessing more than 1.5 million children. The results catalyzed national, regional, and global debate on whether being in school translated to learning and drove a shift from the Millennium Development Goals to focus on access to the Sustainable Development Goals focus on learning outcomes. Uwezo assessment results are widely cited in flagship global publications including the World Bank’s 2018 World Development Report.

Under Dr. Ruto’s leadership, PAL Network’s member organizations conducted 60+ assessments, mobilizing over 1 million volunteers to assess more than 9 million children, and implementing targeted remedial and accelerated learning programs reaching 155,000+ children.

Dr. Ruto oversaw Zizi Afrique’s Accelerated Learning Programme pilot reaching 25,000+ students in Grades 3-5, catalysing an institutional partnership with three teacher training colleges to strengthen pre-service training in formative assessment and targeted instruction. The pilot was later scaled up through partnerships with 28 local civil society organisations to reach 40,000+ children in 318 schools across nine counties.

Whilst at PAL Network, Dr. Ruto was appointed Chairperson of the Kenya Institute for Curriculum Development (KICD), a role that she held from 2017 to 2021. During this time, she was appointed to lead Kenya’s COVID-19 National Education Response Committee in 2020.

From 2021 to 2022, Dr. Ruto was appointed Chief Administrative Secretary of Kenya’s Ministry of Education to oversee the nationwide implementation of the competency-based curriculum reform. In this role, she spearheaded teacher education reforms, and supported the presidential directive to ensure 100% transition from primary to secondary school, with a focus on the hardest-to-reach and most marginalised children.

She has also worked as a lecturer at Kenyatta University, a visiting professor at Hiroshima University in Japan, a teacher trainer, and a secondary school teacher.

Snehar Shah is CEO of Moringa School in Kenya, a learning accelerator committed to closing the skills gap in Africa’s job markets by delivering transformative tech-based learning in Software Engineering, Data Science, Cybersecurity, and Product Design to jobseekers, before connecting them with local and international employers in need of talent. Shah is now scaling the EdTech company across Africa.

Since its inception in 2014, Moringa has enrolled 6,000+ students and graduated over 3,000 students of which 33% are women with a target to reach 50% women in the next three years. Shah places a strong focus on gender equality with women making up 67% of the Board and 51% of the staff.

Moringa and Mastercard Foundation, through the Young Africa Works Strategy, entered into a three-year funding partnership aimed at strengthening Moringa’s capacity to provide a quality education that leads to employment for young people in Africa. To date, over 80% of the graduates have earned employment opportunities locally and globally through the tech and soft skills they acquired at Moringa.

Moringa School has been able to offer a viable alternative to students unable to afford to study at African universities and through its partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, it has provided scholarships to low-income students.

Moringa’s impact on its students has been profound. While 80% of students who enroll at Moringa are unemployed at the time they apply, 77% of self-sponsored students and 67% of fully sponsored students obtain employment within 12 months of graduating. Those who are employed before joining had an average monthly salary of KSH 15,000 at the time, but go on to gain jobs with an average starting salary of KSH 38,000 after graduating. A typical Moringa graduate with three years of experience can expect to earn around KSH 120,000 per month on average – eight times the minimum wage.

Shah has spearheaded a partnership with a leading boot camp in the US, Flatiron School, to provide its cutting-edge curriculum and tech training using a live learning model with African tutors. The training has been delivered in Kenya, Rwanda, Nigeria, Ghana, and Uganda – giving world-class education to African students at a fraction of the price US students would pay.

Moringa has been named among the Top Technology Pioneers by the World Economic Forum in 2021, Top 50 Edtech Bootcamps in Africa 2020 – 2022 by HolonIQ, and most recently received the LinkedIn award for Best Talent Provider in Sub-Saharan Africa 2023.

Mayank Dhingra, Senior Education Business Leader, Southern Europe, Middle East and Africa, at HP said:

“My warmest congratulations to Sara Ruto and Snehar Shah on being named Top 10 finalists for the Africa Education Medal 2023. Their tireless work to improve education stands as an inspiration to us all and I hope many others will follow in their footsteps to become leaders in the field.

“HP has a bold goal to accelerate digital equity for 150 million people globally by 2030. Only by joining forces and aligning with NGOs, government, educators and businesses can we truly improve the education environment. The Africa Education Medal brings together all those who are changing the face of African education, whose vital work deserves to be celebrated.”

Vikas Pota, Founder and CEO of T4 Education, said:

Africa’s teachers and school leaders, and its leaders of governments, NGOs and businesses, all play a crucial part in unlocking the continent’s potential through quality education. African education stands at a crossroads in the wake of the pandemic, but if leaders from across the continent in every field can work together then they can build the lasting change needed.

“I congratulate Sara Ruto and Snehar Shah on their achievements and I hope their success serves as a rallying cry for changemakers to come forward and make a difference.”

Cloud skills and workforce development training bring opportunities to upskill and reskill individuals in local communities and build a diverse talent pipeline

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 8th, 2023

Moringa School announces a collaborative effort with Amazon Web Services (AWS) as an authorized AWS Training Partner to provide technical skills training to Africa’s fastest-growing tech talent development.  As an AWS Training Partner, Moringa School will offer classroom and digital training on AWS courses including AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials and AWS Solution Architect, amongst other AWS-authored training.

According to the AWS Global Digital Skills Report, 85% of workers report that they now need more technical knowledge to do their jobs as a result of changes in their work due to the pandemic. Further, according to Draup, in 2021, there were 7.8 million cloud jobs posted in 45 countries, but only 2.8 million cloud professionals, resulting in a talent gap of five million.

As Cloud usage continues to rise and companies opt to adopt a Cloud-first business approach, the demand for skilled talent has also coincided with the rise in usage. A report by Forrester surveyed companies and discovered the growing demand for cloud professionals in the market despite limited supply. Another survey of job sites like LinkedIn and Indeed.com revealed that there were more than 500,000 open jobs in the East African region but the very limited talent to occupy and therefore leading to higher workloads and salary disequilibrium in the market.

In line with Moringa’s mission “to build talent and opportunities through transformative tech-based learning experiences” through this program, Moringa will provide digital skills training to underserved groups, young people, and students leading to different roles and career paths. With an alumni network of more than 4,000 software engineering graduates, Moringa sees a great opportunity to tap into this segment to roll out cloud computing skills training leveraging training developed by the experts at AWS.

Through the “Moringa World” Community Platform thousands of students will be able to advance in their careers by having a full content library available to them, pursue AWS Certifications, and incorporate learning pathways within the existing boot camps to earn AWS Certifications.

According to market research, Moringa conducted with its Alumni, vendor certifications is valued more than degrees or diplomas. As an AWS Training Partner, Moringa will help its students build the in-demand skills and industry-validated expertise employers are looking for not just locally but globally. Those who successfully obtain AWS Certification through this program will have validated their technical skills and cloud expertise to grow in their career and business. Additionally, AWS Certification is an industry-recognized credential that can help program participants propel in their careers, whether they are looking to find a new role, showcase their skills to take on a new project or become their team’s go-to expert.

Moringa is focused on not just being Kenya’s Tech Talent Hub for recruitment agencies, corporates and global tech giants but also a key training provider for its students with a practical curriculum that is linked to job outcomes. Moringa offers a globally competitive curriculum from its collaboration with Flatiron school, the Leading Tech training Bootcamp in the US to its running the Safaricom Digital Academy.

“The scarcity of individuals with cloud skills is a major concern for our AWS Partners and customers, and hiring the necessary talent continues to pose a real challenge to the industry. Through our cloud training and education programs, we are preparing diverse learners for in-demand cloud roles around the world. With Moringa School, we are re-inventing how talent is cultivated, trained, and retained, and building a pipeline of cloud talent for the future,” said Maureen Lonergan, vice president, AWS Training and Certification.

Snehar Shah, Moringa School CEO also commented, “I will admit that there is still more work to be done when preparing our students for the job market, but we have gotten one step closer to finding a long-term solution to this monster we call unemployment. Maybe, what we do know is that continuous feedback, especially from our Alumni, will help us understand the gaps, and fill them so we as Moringa School are better equipped to train and support our current and prospective students!”

Danny Myles, a recent graduate of Moringa also said “Finding a good place to start after graduation, is not quite easy, but thanks to Moringa School, even after equipping me with market-ready skills they still went ahead and placed me at I&M Bank for me to gain experience as a Software Engineer.”

NAIROBI, Kenya, March 21 – Aspira Kenya, a wholly owned subsidiary of Cim Financial Services Ltd and Moringa school have unveiled a partnership that will enable students to benefit from its Soma Loan education financing facility as they seek to acquire critical market-driven skills in technology.

Through the partnership, students will be able to access finance to purchase laptops and hi-tech machinery, desks, chairs, and other resources they need to start off on their professional or entrepreneurial journey.

“Financing of education is a critical investment in the future of Kenya, as it helps to promote social and economic development, reduce poverty, and enhance the overall quality of life for Kenyan citizens, irrespective of their socio-economic background,” said Cim Financial Services Ltd CEO Mark van Beuningen.

On his part, Snehar Shah, Moringa School CEO said, “The challenge we have as a country is to produce skilled workers who understand how to use technology to solve problems and to build a workforce with such competencies these trainees require affordable and flexible financing to see them through their respective courses.”

“Despite the marketability of tech courses, many deserving students face challenges to pay the course fees, which is why having a financing partner will be of benefit to students,” Snehar added.

Moringa School is a multi-disciplinary learning accelerator committed to closing the skills gap in Africa’s job markets by delivering transformative tech-based learning to high-potential job seekers, and on graduation connecting them to local and international employers who desire high-quality tech talent.

Through the introduction of its 5-6 month Software Development and Data Science Bootcamps, the school has trained over 7,000 learners from diverse backgrounds and experiences while channeling their motivation to learn and grow through a market-aligned curriculum.

Aspira has unveiled plans to partner with more schools, universities, and professional training institutions in Kenya to enable them to focus on their core business while Aspira assists with the financing of the course fees.

Unemployment is a common denominator in any economy, whether a 1st world or 3rd world country, this is a struggle that is yet to be fixed. Here in Kenya, certain events of the past two years had a significant impact on youth unemployment. For instance, the COVID-19 pandemic came with unprecedented economic ramifications that led to job cuts and layoffs, shut-downs and general slowdown on major sectors of the economy as consumption in major sectors shrunk. The prolonged electioneering period also had its own share of impact on employment with firms taking a cautious approach to see out the elections before making any major commitments in investments for staff or new markets/ products.

While we try to understand this specific problem that just will not go away, Moringa School conducted an independent study that sought to understand the correlation that our training has on job outcomes. The study was carried out by SJF Analytics, a Nariobi based M&E firm and funded via our partnership with Mastercard Foundation.

We are not concluding that education alone can sort out the problem of unemployment but it sure does have a very big impact leading to dignified jobs and careers. The ironic thing is that in the Tech sector, demand outstrips supply, in the sense that employers’ preference for more senior hires cannot be satisfied by available talent in the market. In the case of Tech talent the universities we have offer a more general coursework but this can be complemented by coding bootcamps and tech accelerators like Moringa School who offer more practical curriculum that is outcomes based and linked to job readiness.

So, how does an alumnus from Moringa School perform versus a student who studied IT/Tech related courses in a general university? While we do not have concrete data on the latter, in finding employment after graduating from Moringa School, the study showed that more than half of the Moringa Alumni were able to find employment within a year of completing their course(s). In the cut-throat, ever-changing world that is Tech, Moringa School students have the edge that employers are looking for.

The most popular position held in most of the employer organizations was Software Developer/Engineer with Data Scientist/ Analyst coming in second, with other roles in demand such as Full-stack and Android developers. It is important to note that our respondents from the selected alumni were mostly male, with 38% being female the majority having graduated in 2022, being self-sponsored students with 71% of the respondents having trained in Full stack development. We also found that most of our alumni 69% were degree/diploma/certificate holders, while the rest come straight from high school.

In relation to the employers we interviewed, a key observation is that about 70% of the alumni are employed in their area of study. Out of those employed, 65% of them were both employed and running a business at the same time, 23% were in full-time employment only, and 12% running a business only. The employers interviewed ranged from state parastatals, private entities within different industries to NGOs.

The striking finding was the salary progression of our graduates, with the average salary of students before joining Moringa being at KES 15,000 per month (in line with the national minimum wage). This average grew to KES 36,000 per month being the first salary post graduation. The progress there on as graduates gained more experience is exponential with average starting salary in the 2nd job being at KES 75,000 per month and those in 3rd jobs attracting beyond KES 120,000 per month. The average time between roles was found to be one year showing the fast paced nature of this sector. We are also observing a growing trend in freelancing (12% of respondents claimed to be involved in this activity either full or part time augmenting their core income) with examples of graduates working with global employers either remotely or by relocation as was the case with Jusus Mbaluka who recently secured a job as a Software Engineer with Amazon in London, having graduated with Moringa some five years ago.

I will admit that there is still more work to be done when preparing our students for the job market, but could we have gotten one step closer to finding a long-term solution to this monster we call unemployment? Maybe, what we do know is that continuous feedback, especially from our alumni, will help us understand the gaps, and fill them so we as Moringa School are better equipped to train and support our current and prospective students!

How Tech Education is Increasing the Earnings of Young Africans

The way we learn is changing. Technology is playing an increasingly important role in education, and this is especially true in Africa. Tech education has been a pivotal key in increasing the earning power of young Africans and closing the skills gap in many African countries. Before 2010, many African students had to compete with millions of others to get roles in government or risk getting underpaid in some private firms.

People are creating software and hardware solutions with the growing demand for simplified processes. This is why different tech roles are gaining popularity in the global job market. Thankfully, Africans aren’t left behind as they can compete with other foreign counterparts.

Tech Education in Africa

As of today, some of the highest-paid roles, both locally and internationally, are tech-related. Many Africans who were able to break into tech out-earned the minimum wage of their countries. And so far, they’ve still been able to meet up with the rising inflation.

The most significant barrier to entering tech is education. Since it wasn’t a part of the traditional school courses in African countries, earlier tech experts took foreign online courses and spent years practicing. There was also the help of communities, especially with running projects and helping out with blockers. However, this barrier has significantly lowered with the help of organizations like Moringa

These institutions hire professionals who train students, ensure they get technical and soft skills, and even go as far as finding employment opportunities for these students. There’s also the challenge of having access to resources.

The students need laptops to practice learning and develop their skills effectively. These institutions often have laptops students can use either on-site or at home, thanks to sponsorships.

Moringa helps bridge the tech skills gap in Africa by providing market-aligned skills training. This institution supports graduates in their career journey by providing them with the necessary hard-technical skills and soft life skills, learners are equipped with tools to help them build long-term success in work.

Grey X Moringa School Partnership

Moringa is a tech-based learning institution that offers training in Software Development, Data Science, Product Design, and short courses like DevOps and Data Visualization. This institution is currently based in Nairobi Kenya and has recently launched online training programs in the West African market in Ghana and Nigeria.

There are full-time programs and part-time online classes for students who want more flexibility. In addition to their classes, students get career professional development training and join an alumni network to find employment opportunities and placements for 1-year post-graduation.

Although it’s a paid program, students can access full-time or part-time scholarships. This way, Africans who don’t have resources can still apply for financial aid to meet up with the fees.

Conversely, Grey is a fintech company simplifying international transactions for Africans. Grey provides foreign bank accounts, instant foreign exchange, and global money transfers. Because of how essential tech talent is to businesses like Grey, they’ve been keen on also reducing the barriers in tech through career fair event sessions, partnerships, and scholarships for Africans.

In 2022, Grey and Moringa School staged a career fair for Kenyan students interested in learning technical skills and preparation for the workplace. It is a means to get more young Africans into the ecosystem, position them for global opportunities, and increase their earning power over time. Grey would also look forward to sponsoring Moringa school students in 2023. More details about the sponsorship will be shared later in the year.

We are looking to hold more info sessions and events on Fin Tech or Tech, in general, that will be geared towards supporting graduates and students who would be interested in launching freelance careers.
